General Health Influences
Almost any chronic illness
can affect fertility to some degree if it is severe
enough. With some illnesses, the degree to which it
affects fertility is directly related to the severity
of the illness, or the degree to which it is controlled.
Statistically, it is
more difficult for women to conceive or carry to term
when any major system in their body is functioning abnormally.
And many disease processes interfere with circulation,
ovulation, hormonal production or balance, immune responses
(which are involved in allowing an egg to implant successfully),
allergic responses, blood sugar balance, blood quality,
etc, will affect fertility or pregnancy viability. If
any one of those systems gets messed up, it can directly
or secondarily influence fertility.
Besides chronic illness,
fertility can be affected by fatigue, sleep disorders,
stress, chronic pain, and other general health factors.
Fatigue and sleep disorders can cause, or be caused
by, hormonal imbalances, circulatory problems, poor
digestion, and problems with other systems in the body.
Chronic pain causes your body to release hormones and
chemicals at higher or lower levels than normal, which can also
interfere with ovulation, implantation, or pregnancy
stability.
Fatigue, pain, stress,
and sleep disorders can affect men as much as they affect
women, and can contribute to either infertility or miscarriage.
Control of other health problems is also just as important
to men, as it affects sperm production, and quality.
You'll also have to
balance the need for control of illness against the
need for certain medications that could negatively affect
fertility. You may need to change the way you control
certain conditions, or gain better control of them.
